Mate de Coca

Der ganze Trip fängt mit drei Stunden verspätung in Frankfurt an.

Aufgrund dieser sind wir "gezwungen" in San Juan (Puerto Rico) im Edelhotel auf Condor kosten einzuchecken.

Somit haben wir weitere 24 Stunden zur Tarnung unserer "Surfboards" mit Bettlaken aus dem Hotel.

The trip began with a 3h delay in Frankfurt. The good thing about that was free hotel and food. This also ment that we had 24h to camouflage our "Surfboards" with bed sheats out of the hotel.

Die ganze Mühe ist umsonst, die Tarnung als "special big wave surf-boards" flog auf - wenigstens konnten wir die Waage am Flughafen manipulieren.

Nach weiterer Zwischenlandung in Panama erreichen wir Lima mitten in der Nacht.

All our efforts haven't payed out, cause they unpacked the "Surfboards". At least we were able to manipulate the scale. After short brake in Panama we arrived at Lima Airport around midnight.

Taxi fahren mit Kajaks auf dem Dach ohne Dachträger - in Lima kein Problem

Voller Tatendrang, in den Fußstapfen Herbert Rittlingers (Kajakpionier), machen wir uns auf von Lima (0m) nach Cerro de Pasco (4300m) um den Pegel des Rio Lauricocha zu checken.

Verkehrsmittel der Wahl: 
8 std. "ranziger Bus".

Stoked and full of energy we started our trip, following the path of Herbert Rittlinger (kayak pioneer), from Lima (0ft) up to Cerro de Pasco (14.100ft) to check the waterlevel of the Rio Lauricocha.
We choose the 8h drive with a crappy bus.

Wir wundern uns noch warum wir nur mit Inkas im Bus sitzen.
Rätsels Lösung folgte im zweiten Stock unseres Hotels nach schleppen unserer Boote:

Atemnot, Fieber, Herzrasen, Schüttelfrost, Hitzeanfälle, unbändige Kopfschmerzen.

Nun war guter Rat teuer. Selbst Mate de Coca (Tee aus Kokablättern), Asperin und 8l Wasser brachten keine Linderung. Die Höhenkrankheit nahm uns jegliche Aussicht auf die noch 60km vor uns liegende Anfahrt zur Quelle (welche über einen Pass mit 5300m führt).

We wondered why we were the only gringos on the bus. 8h later we discovered the reason, carrying our kayaks up in to the second floor.

Geschlagen müssen wir die Rückreise in niedrigere Gefilde antreten, um uns von der Höhenkrankheit zu erholen. Die kleine Niederlage bestärkt uns noch mehr in unserem Vorhaben den oberen Amazonas als erste Europäer zu befahren.

The alltitude sickness made the 60km over a 17.000ft tall ridge to the put in of the Rio Lauricocha undoable. Our only chance was to move to lower ground for recovery.
This set back strengthend us in our will to achieve the first european descent of the upper Amazon.

Wir entschließen uns nach Cusco, Hauptstadt der Inca, zu reisen (24st. Busfahrt) um uns dort in 3600m Höhe zu Akklimatisieren, Einzupaddeln und auf den Rest der Gruppe zu warten.

We decided to do the 24h bus drive to the Inca capital Cusco (12.000ft) to get used to the alltitude and wait for the rest of our crew.
